Radstock Youth Hub can help young people “Get A Job!”   Back to top

Young people can get help finding work or training opportunities through Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Radstock Youth Hub.

New “Get A Job!” sessions are being held at the youth hub, on Church Street, Radstock, every Monday from 12noon to 2pm.

Bath & North East Somerset Council is delivering the initiative in partnership with Connexions and Norton Radstock College’s “Job Mother” to put as many services as possible under one roof and help young people move forward into work or training. The project is aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds.

Councillor Nathan Hartley (Lib-Dem, Peasedown), Deputy Leader of Council and Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Youth, said: “These free sessions are designed to open up career opportunities as part of Bath & North East Somerset Council’s commitment to improving the life chances of young people.

“A Connexions career advisor will be on hand to offer expert advice on career paths and training. A tutor from Norton Radstock College’s ‘Job Mother’ will also help young people develop their skills in areas like job searching, interview skills and communication.

“Staff from the project will help support young people to write CVs and covering letters as well as offering the facilities to print and send them out to prospective employers.”

The free sessions will offer a computer based training course on food hygiene and the opportunity to obtain a CSCS card for working in the construction industry. Support will be given to young people who would like to get qualifications in these areas.

Councillor Simon Allen (Lib-Dem, Radstock), Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, said: “The initiative at Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Radstock Youth Hub will offer assistance with funding applications to enable young people to access employment and training. The project also aims to help young people to find volunteer placements to gain work experience which may be needed for them to secure paid employment.

“If a young person is considering starting their own business, they can get help to access the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme as well as support with building their ideas.”

Dog Toilet binsLitter-pickers' dilema a thing of the past?   Back to top

The Parish Council is investigating the repair/replacement/addition of Dog Toilet bins in appropriate areas throughout the village.

PLEASE NOTE Bath & North East Somerset Council have now upgraded the status of litter bins to accept properly bagged dog mess. It is hoped that this knowledge will decrease the number of bags left in hedges along popular dog walking routes for collection by volunteer litter-pickers.

LOCAL BUTCHER SUPPORTS TRANSITION   Back to top

Cllr David Walker, Brian Millard, Cllr Karen Walker

A Peasedown St John’s local butcher has decided to give villagers the chance to sell some of their homemade produce to the wider public.

Brian Millard, of Millard Family Butchers, wants to encourage more people to grow produce in their own gardens, and become much more sustainable in their lifestyles.

He’s working with Peasedown Parish Councillors David and Karen Walker to launch the new initiative.

Cllr David Walker, himself a keen gardener, said:
“Millard Family Butchers is ideally located in Bath Road, the local high street, to act as a community hub where people can come along to sell their produce.
I’ve grown my own vegetables for many years, and now, thanks to Brian, a large number of people can enjoy them – as well as my immediate friends and family.”

Nationally, the UK has seen a growing trend over the last five years of ‘Grow your own’ projects, Transition Town initiatives and ventures such as the creation of Community Farms. All of these, as well being fun and enjoyable for people to get involved with, have a positive impact on the environment. Peasedown itself has the Peasedown Area Transition (PAT).

Cllr Karen Walker added:
“In an age when we are seeing a social trend towards ‘growing your own’ and sustainable living it’s important that communities rally together to offer support and advice. As the availability of cheap oil runs out, we all need to make sure our lifestyles are less dependent on car travel, large supermarkets and foreign holidays.
We need to make the transition to being more local!”

Brian also prepares individually weighed and priced sausages and burgers on the premises.  All his meats are locally farmed.
